Overview
This Junior Site Reliability Engineer role supports the Department of the Interior’s Recreation.gov mission through the Footprint platform, a cloud-native system that enables millions of visitors to access and reserve experiences across public lands. You’ll help ensure reliability, scalability, and security for a service that connects people with national parks, forests, and cultural landmarks nationwide. The successful candidate will work within a team to enhance DevOps practices, automate build and deployment processes, and manage cloud infrastructure, primarily focusing on containers and infrastructure-as-code in an AWS environment.

Responsibilities
- Develop tools and processes to advance DevOps or DevSecOps maturity by automating builds, regression testing, monitoring, and release deployment across environments.
- Administer and deploy applications within Kubernetes clusters, ensuring optimal container management.
- Manage, secure, and operate cloud-native solutions in AWS, focusing on containerized environments.
- Implement, maintain, and update Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
- Automate tasks of varying complexity, including system deploys and troubleshooting.
- Utilize AI tooling to streamline operational tasks and improve efficiency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to open-source or commercial tools within cloud environments.
Qualifications
- At least two years of hands-on experience in cloud computing, automation, or infrastructure management.
- Experience with Kubernetes administration and application deployment paradigms.
- Knowledge of developing, managing, and securing AWS cloud-native solutions, especially with containers.
- Practical experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
- Proficiency in Object-Oriented Programming fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience automating complex tasks involving deployment and monitoring.
- Familiarity with scripting languages like Python and BASH.
- Experience triaging and resolving issues within cloud environments, especially in regulated or government-facing contexts.
- Familiarity with AI tooling to enhance productivity.
Desired Skills
- Experience with AWS CDK and TypeScript.
- Knowledge of AWS security services such as GuardDuty, Macie, Detective, and Inspector.
- Understanding of logging and organization-management solutions like CloudWatch, OpenSearch, and AWS Organizations.
- Experience operating in environments requiring Authorization to Operate (ATO).
- Background in managing and troubleshooting in government or regulated environments.
