About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer to join our Foundation Model team. In this pivotal role, you will tackle some of Stripe’s most complex technical challenges, focusing on developing and deploying foundational models that underpin our payments, risk management, and merchant solutions. You will contribute both through hands-on technical development and strategic initiatives that influence how machine learning systems are scaled and integrated across the company. Your expertise will directly impact Stripe’s ability to innovate in areas such as fraud detection, merchant insights, and financial services, helping shape the future of payments technology.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience building and deploying machine learning models, with a focus on AI/ML product features.
- Proficiency in Python, with demonstrated ability to write production-quality code.
- Strong experimental mindset, capable of identifying and validating state-of-the-art ML techniques.
- Experience managing large, complex ML projects and leading organizational transformation through AI initiatives.
- Deep passion for developing cutting-edge technologies and solving complex problems.
- Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) with a research-oriented background is preferred.
- Experience with large-scale, data-rich products in payments, commerce, or related domains is advantageous.
- Knowledge of ML applications in fraud prevention, merchant intelligence, or financial services is a plus.
- Published research or open-source contributions in AI/ML are desirable.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine foundational models for payments, merchants, and consumers across Stripe’s product ecosystem.
- Fine-tune and optimize large language models using state-of-the-art techniques, including multimodal alignment, knowledge distillation, quantization, and reasoning.
- Drive technical excellence by designing and reviewing AI/ML system architectures, maintaining high-quality code, and ensuring scalable deployment.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to identify and prioritize investments in foundation models, assistants, and AI agents that unlock new capabilities.
- Contribute to Stripe’s overall technical strategy by providing AI/ML insights during company-wide decision-making and roadmap planning.
- Mentor and guide ML engineers across the organization, fostering best practices in experimentation, platform adoption, and technical problem-solving.
